What is what to do when alt f4 doesn't work?

If Alt+F4 isn't closing a window, here's what to try:

  • Check if the active window is truly the program you want to close. Sometimes focus is on a background process. Click directly on the application's window you intend to close to make sure it is active.

  • Try Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Find the application in the "Processes" tab, select it, and click "End task". This will forcefully close the program.

  • Check for stuck keys. A stuck Alt or F4 key can interfere with the command. Press each key a few times to ensure they aren't physically stuck. A keyboard cleaning may also be helpful.

  • Restart your computer. As a last resort, restarting your computer will close all running programs and resolve most software glitches. Use the Windows start menu to restart.

  • Check for malware: In rare cases, malware can interfere with system functions. Run a scan with your antivirus software.

  • Consider System Errors: Check the system's event viewer for any system errors.
